Paid a visit to the relatively recently opened Lowdown Espresso Bar yesterday. Their short macchiato and flat white ticked all the boxes for me. Nice to see them adopting a “Melbourne approach” to their pricing structure too. That is, charging a fair rather than exorbitant amount for great coffee.
Lowdown are tucked away in Cloisters Arcade off Hay Street near His Majesty’s Theatre.
Worth a visit if you’re in the neighbourhood. They’re passionate about what they do. I like that!

PS. This area’s fast filling with other great cafes. Check out the comments on this post for more recommendations from my fellow coffee fiends!
Ah! I was wandering around near Cloisters this afternoon. Looks like I missed a great coffee opportunity. Must. Rectify. Soon.
Incidentally, there’s a terrific choice of great coffee in the CBD King St “precinct” near His Majesty’s. Tiger Tiger (which is also a small bar/restaurant) http://tigertigercoffeebar.com/, Ristretto http://www.ristretto.com.au/, Velvet Espresso http://www.velvetespresso.com.au/
Oh and add to that list Zekka http://abstractgourmet.com/2008/04/cafe-zekka/, Cimbalino http://www.cimbalino.com.au/, and Cafe Vinyl http://www.melbournecoffeereview.com/?s=cafe%20vinyl
