“Man is but a reed …….. But he is a thinking reed.”
Blaise Pascal: Pensées (200 H3)

The Arundo Reed Quintet performs a world premiere for Musica Viva’s Ménage series, with the première of “The Moon Over the Day” by John Polglase.

The first group of its kind in Australia, the recently-formed Arundo gains its inspiration from the Dutch “Calefax Reed Quintet”, a group formed some 20 years ago.

The repertoire draws from the old and new, ranging from William Byrd’s music of the 1500s right up until John Polglase’s “Moon Over the Day (2006). All Arundo’s pieces have been especially composed or arranged for this unique combination of instruments.

Arundo’s name is derived from a type of cane, arundo donax which is used to make reeds for all the instruments in their group.

The players are drawn from Perth’s finest reed instrumentalists.

Leanne Glover – Oboe
Jane Kircher - Bassoon
Matthew Styles – Saxophone
Katherine Smith – Clarinet
Alex Millier – Bass Clarinet

  3. Hoi Alban

Currently there’s only a midi file of the Polglase at myspace.com/arundoreedquintet. We hope to record it live in concert and put an excerpt up after October 3.

    Cheers
